BHA Inquiry finds Conspiracy to Halt Horse’s Victory
LONDON – A British Horseracing Authority (BHA) investigation has revealed evidence that Ashley Barnes’ father-in-law, Mr. J.Lowe, conspired with jockey Jack Andrews to prevent a horse from winning a race at Wolverhampton on March 2nd, 2024.The BHA disciplinary panel found Lowe instructed andrews to stop the horse, named “dunkeld Dreamer,” from achieving victory, resulting in meaningful penalties for both individuals.
The case centers around a pre-race arrangement where Lowe, acting on behalf of barnes, allegedly offered Andrews financial incentive to ensure Dunkeld Dreamer did not win the 4:19 race.Evidence presented to the panel included communications between Lowe and Andrews indicating a clear agreement to impede the horse’s performance. This manipulation undermines the integrity of horse racing and impacts betting markets, potentially defrauding punters and damaging the sport’s reputation.
Jack Andrews received a 12-month ban from racing, suspended for six months, and was fined £3,750. Mr.Lowe was found to have acted in breach of the Rules of Racing and received a 6-month ban, also suspended for six months, and a £5,000 fine. The BHA emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating that such actions erode public trust in the fairness of racing.
The investigation began following unusual betting patterns observed around the race, prompting a BHA review. The panel’s decision underscores the BHA’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the sport and deterring future attempts at race-fixing. Both andrews and Lowe have the right to appeal the panel’s decision.
