Arvada West’s Layla Petz Secures Back-to-Back 5A Gymnastics All-Around Titles
THORNTON, CO – Arvada West senior Layla Petz cemented her legacy as one of Colorado’s top gymnasts Thursday, repeating as the Class 5A individual all-around state champion at Thornton High School. Petz’s winning score of 38.300 marks a triumphant conclusion to her high school career and underscores her dedication to consistent advancement.
This victory is significant as it demonstrates the power of sustained effort and strategic preparation in a highly competitive field. Petz’s achievement not only crowns her individual journey but also elevates the standard for Arvada West’s gymnastics program, inspiring future athletes to pursue excellence. The all-around title is considered the most prestigious individual honour in 5A gymnastics, and Petz’s repeat performance solidifies her place among the state’s elite.
Petz’s winning performance was built on strong showings across all four events: a 9.725 on vault,9.225 on bars, 9.550 on beam, and a meet-high 9.880 on floor.
“it’s just exciting, getting to bring it full-circle,” Petz said. “I got it last year and then getting to still work super hard was really rewarding. It wasn’t a give-me. I didn’t come in knowing I was going to win,so it was great to see all of my work pay off just like it did last year. This year was a little more stressful, but I tried to live in the moment more because it’s my last year. I definitely went out there and had a lot more fun. I had my best season and our team did amazing. it’s a great way to end my senior year.”
Arvada West head coach Lori Hayes emphasized Petz’s commitment to continuous growth. ”The last two years, this has been a goal of hers,” Hayes said. “She puts in the work in the offseason and we always try to come up with something new to make her stand out from all the other gymnasts. She’s always striving to be her best.”
Following Petz, Mountain range’s Ella Mikolajewski claimed the runner-up position with a score of 37.550, while Broomfield’s Liliana Mojahn finished third at 37.500. Valor Christian’s Lauren Becker (37.025) and Chatfield’s Marcel Gonzalez Moreno (36.675) rounded out the top five.
