Will there be a crash in Zurich’s Niederdorf on Friday? Views on social media give cause for concern. “I don’t want to cause stress with my party,” writes the organizer on Tiktok and Snapchat. “I just want everyone to be able to ‘get off fat’ again. But if the party is broken up, we’ll fight back! ».

Since parties are banned, it will certainly be broken up should it take place. And it doesn’t sound as if all the boys then move away peacefully. The party location was chosen in Niederdorf, part of Zurich’s old town, known for its medieval streets and the Grossmünster – and from Friday also for the youth riots?

The Niederdorf is known for numerous different shops in which tourists and locals can buy a wide variety of items from all over the world or lose themselves in the numerous shop windows. Are the shopkeepers and their employees afraid that they will be faced with a pile of broken glass on Saturday morning? “Unlike others, we don’t have blinds,” says George Koutrios, owner of the clothing store of the same name. Nor does he feel responsible for defending his shop, which he has owned since 2006. “The police have to be prepared, not us,” he says.

Hoping for the police
Mike from the cell phone accessory store “modfreak” is also not very worried. He is generally not a particularly fearful person. But he does hope that the young people will remain sensible. “Hopefully they will realize that shopkeepers will have a tough time in the Corona period even without riots.”

Danièle Michaels, an employee at «Chäs Cheller», relies on the experience of the Zurich police. “The authorities will see to it that nothing happens. They have had practice with May 1st. ” Don’t be afraid.

“We are used to a lot in Zurich”
It sounds similar with Simone Duff, deputy branch manager of the shoe store “Pomp it up”. “We’re already used to a lot, just from the street parade. There used to be a lot of rubbish and spray shops here, but that has subsided for a few years. We hope that doesn’t change on Friday, but I’m not really worried about that. ” After all, one is in Zurich and is used to demos and property damage. That is why she will close her shop as usual on Friday evening and then simply “hope that nothing happens.”
–
The Zurich police have so far not been able to see what their strategy would be against any riots. For weeks there has been an increased presence on the weekends. How exactly one reacts to the announced meeting in Niederdorf, one does not want to comment “for reasons of police tactics”.
