Zurich: Police Scatter Prohibited Small Demos – Switzerland

Despite the coronavirus-related ban on rallies, activists gathered in Zurich on Friday for several small protests.

The municipal police used loudspeakers to disperse the crowd and arrested several demonstrators. No overflows or damage were reported. Zurich police on Twitter again stressed that they could not tolerate such actions due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We appeal to the social responsibility of each individual,” she wrote.

Armaments factory attacked

In addition, autonomists attacked on the night of Thursday to Friday the industrial site of Rheinmetall Air Defense in Zurich-Oerlikon with pyrotechnic devices. The damage has not yet been quantified. The autonomists set fire to the machines at the entrance to the site, explained the Zurich municipal police. An investigation is underway.

The perpetrators claimed responsibility for their act the night of May 1 on a notorious online platform. Their objective is to attack the arms industry. At Oerlikon, Rheinmetall Air Defense manufactures anti-aircraft guns.

Manif with balconies in Zurich

Instead of taking to the streets, Zurich residents demonstrated for once on their balconies: with a “concert” of covers, they loudly demanded higher salaries for sales staff and carers.

Meeting was given at 11:00 am sharp to demonstrate at the balconies and windows. For 5 minutes, saucepan lids and whistles were heard in different parts of the city at the request of the Union Syndicale Zurich.

Traditionally left-wing districts like Kreis 4 and 5 have particularly followed suit. Other areas of the city, however, hardly followed.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all May Day street demonstrations are banned this year. The various speeches are exceptionally transmitted online. (ats / nxp)
