New name comes to the ‘prominence’ in face of Facebook’s public image crisis
Faced with the Facebook Papers crisis, according to a news advanced by CNN Brasil, Facebook changed its name. Now it’s called Meta and calls itself “a social technology company”.
The social network will continue with the same name — rebranding serves the company, which in addition to Facebook also controls the Instagram, O WhatsApp it’s at Oculus.
The news was announced today, Thursday (28) by Mark Zuckerberg during the event Facebook Connect, which discusses augmented and virtual reality within the company.
The name is an allusion to the metaverse, an effort by the company to combine augmented and virtual reality, according to news from CNN Brasil.
“I have been thinking a lot about our identity and how we will start this new chapter. Facebook is one of the most used products in the history of the world”said Zuckerberg. “Today, we are seen as a social media company. But in our DNA we are a company that creates technology to connect people. And the metaverse is the next frontier, just like social media was when we started”, completed the CEO.
“I know that some people will believe this is not the time to focus on the future, and I want to recognize that there are important issues to be worked on in the present. There will always be”, said Zuckerberg at the event. “So for a lot of people I don’t know if there will be a good time to focus on the future. But I also know that there are many of you who feel the same way as I do”, declared.
In addition to the name change, the news of the CNN Brasil reveals that Zuckerberg introduced a number of metaverse concepts, including social, gaming, and desktop features.
Messenger, for example, will allow you to make calls in virtual reality. There are also plans for a virtual store where people can sell virtual goods, as well as a splash screen in Oculus Quest to allow people to chat and play in virtual reality.
“Your devices will no longer be the focal point of attention”, he said Zuckerberg. “We’re starting to see a lot of these technologies coming together in the next five to ten years. Much of this will become popular and many of us will create and inhabit worlds daily [virtuais] that are as detailed and convincing as this one”.

In a statement distributed to the press, the Meta says “The metaverse will function as a hybrid combination of current online social experiences, sometimes expanded in three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will allow you to share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together, and do things you couldn’t do together in the physical world.”.
According to the news published by CNN Brasil, the company stresses, however, that its corporate structure is not changing. But they will change as well as report their financial results – which will now be separated between the applications and “Reality Labs”, the division responsible for the initiatives in virtual and augmented reality.
On the stock exchange, the company will use the acronym MVRS from December 1st.
