The Olympics will take place from February 4 to 20 in Beijing and the nearby city of Changjia, where there will be strictly separate athletes and other participants from the Chinese public. Spectators from abroad cannot come to the games.

Journalists staying at the Guizhou Hotel, which is inside an enclosed Olympic balloon, found five condoms in each room, individually wrapped in different colored packaging with a picture of a Chinese lantern. The organizers have not yet announced how many condoms they intend to distribute during the games.

In the handbook, which summarizes anti-civic measures for participants, athletes are instructed to minimize any physical contact, including hugging, clapping, or shaking hands, and to maintain a distance of at least two meters from other participants.

Before last year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo, organizers said they planned to hand out about 150,000 condoms. However, the athletes were told to take them home rather than use them in the Olympic Village, where coronavirus social separation rules also applied.

The tradition of handing out condoms dates back to the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. The purpose of this step was to raise awareness of the risks of HIV, which causes AIDS.
