Zimbabwean expert warns against prescribing veterinary drug by some doctors to fight COVID-19

Some doctors are prescribing a veterinary medicine to their patients in an attempt to prevent or treat COVID-19, a Zimbabwean expert has warned.

In a statement on Saturday, Acting Director General of the Zimbabwe Medicines Control Authority (MCAZ), Richard Rukwata, warned against the use of ivermectin injections for veterinary use to lessen the effects of the drug. COVID-19. Ivermectin belongs to a class of drugs called anthelmintics and works by paralyzing and killing parasites in animals.

“In view of the growing number of inquiries and reports received regarding the use of ivermectin injections for veterinary use for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19, MCAZ strongly advises against members of the public, drug distributors veterinarians and health care practitioners to use injections of ivermectin formulations for veterinary use in humans for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 or any other health problem, “Rukwata said.

His warning comes amid an increase in the number of infections and deaths in recent days, with 985 new cases and 22 deaths recorded on Friday, and a cumulative number of 19,660 infections, 12,184 recoveries and 468 deaths.

Mr Rukwata pointed out that ivermectin for veterinary use was not indicated or approved by MCAZ for use in humans.

“In addition, the general regulations on the control of drugs and related substances have prohibited the use of any veterinary drug for the treatment of humans,” he added.

“All researchers interested in exploring new therapies for COVID-19 can only do so in clinical trials, or in any other way after prior authorization from MCAZ. Unauthorized uses of drugs can lead to harm. negative health problems, a worsening of your condition or even death, ”he said. End
