Zero waste challenge: 13 tonnes of litter saved

Five months later, the results are very positive for David Vieille. The instigator of the zero waste challenge at La Chaux-de-Fonds has done its math: the 27 registered households (or 84 people) each saved nearly 13 kilograms of garbage per month. A total of five tonnes less litter over five months and extrapolating the figures over the year, the result is enormous: 13 tonnes of waste avoided. The equivalent of two garbage trucks according to Fabian Kolly, deputy head chef.

For their part, all of the participants were won over. They met for a last session to take stock. A way for them to exchange a few more tips like freezing their fruit peelings and making jelly or even making yoghurts without a yogurt maker.

Last September, the challenge was launched by David Vieille and the local branch of the environmental association UP (for Umwelt Plateform) with the support of the City. Registrants were able to participate in six free workshops to accompany them on their adventure: making cosmetics and homemade household products, visiting the Fab-lab or even a Repair Café.

A challenge that is too short, however, admits David Vieille, but enough to become aware of his consumption and start to have good habits: go to bulk stores, take these tupperware to go to the butcher or the cheese maker or even make his household paper with old shirts. / vMA
