The St. Aurelia nursing home in the Lower Franconian market town of Zell am Main has been free of the corona virus again this week. In the past five weeks, however, nurses and residents have had to go through difficult times there. A total of seven residents died in connection with a corona infection, although all those affected had been vaccinated twice against the virus. According to the home, they were all in high income and suffered from previous illnesses.
Of course, people were prepared for the fact that double vaccination protection, especially for vulnerable groups, would not be a guarantee that they would not still be severely affected by the virus, says the managing director of the private home, Achim Siedler. And yet the “intensity in such a short time” was surprising and dismaying for everyone. The death of the home residents was all the more tragic as a third vaccination was imminent for all those affected. According to the settlers, all residents of the home who are advised to do so have now been vaccinated for the third time.
The home in the district of Würzburg offers space for a total of 87 residents, around 70 spaces are currently occupied. How exactly the virus got into the home is difficult to understand. But they were “very well prepared” for the virus and were able to react quickly, reports Siedler. One wing of the home was hardly occupied beforehand in order to be able to set up a quarantine station in the event of an emergency. The home was also adequately equipped with the necessary equipment.
Of the employees in the home, only those for whom this can be justified are not fully vaccinated. According to the managing director, the outbreak in the home teaches everyone that the “pandemic is far from over” and that it remains a “great challenge” in every respect, especially for the homes. Siedler describes the atmosphere in the facility as composed. The deaths “did not come out of nowhere” in the home, some of the residents were already over 90. The fact that many residents are now vaccinated for the third time and the house is corona-free again, lets look ahead more confidently.
