ZDFinfo documentary about the torn America

Mainz (ots) – The storm on the Capitol showed the world what the anger is causing the supporters of the elected US President Donald Trump to take to the streets. Until the very end, the elected president fought against his election with all means – his lawyers fought in courts to stay in office. The transfer of power is now overshadowed by the riots, and old democratic practices have been damaged. But where does this anger come from, what are the reasons for the conflict? The documentary “Trumps Erbe – Das Zerrissene Amerika” (Trumps Erbe – Das terrissene Amerika “) will go on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, 8:15 pm on ZDFinfo, on the search for clues in a country that is more torn than ever. The film by Carsten Oberländer will be available from Saturday, January 16 2021, 10 a.m., in the ZDFmediathek. On ZDF it can be seen on the night of January 20 to 21, 2021 at 1:35 and 4:05 a.m.

The search for clues leads, among other places, to Heflin, Alabama, where 90 percent of voters voted for Donald Trump in November 2020. In the local Dixie store run by Bob Costello, Trump fan and proud southerner, Trump fans can stock up on everything their hearts desires. And they all agree: they do not recognize the election of Joe Biden, not even Trump personally would change their mind. Does this mean that the radicalization of citizens in the USA will only increase?

Immediately after the first broadcast, on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, 9:00 p.m., ZDFinfo will broadcast the thematically supplementary documentary “Biblical Superpower – Evangelicals in the USA”.

How people from both political camps deal with the outcome of the US presidential election in 2020 is also shown in the “Auslandsjournal” documentary “American Dreams – The USA after the fateful election”, which was published on the night of January 20th to 21st, 2021 0.45 a.m. and 3.20 a.m. on ZDF. In continuation of the long-term observation of “America’s Fateful Year”, Katja Döhne’s film accompanies Trump supporter Isabel Brown, who made a career in the ultra-conservative student organization “Turning Point”, and the conservative pastor Chuck Kaighen in Missouri, who voted for Trump because he embodies Christian values for him. In the steelworking town of Clairton, Pennsylvania, where the majority of the people voted for Biden, Mayor Richard Lattanzi hopes above all for a change in political and social interaction.

The documentaries “Trumps Erbe – Das Zerrissene Amerika” are available to accredited journalists in advance in the screening room of the ZDF press portal.
