Your nose-digging habit, now is the time to fix it | News/Column | Health Story

When asked if they have a habit of selling snot, most of them avoid the answer because they are shy. But, from children to adults, most people blow their noses. According to an anonymous survey conducted in Wisconsin, about 91% of respondents said they had a habit of blowing their nose.

Be careful, because selling your nose is not only a shameful habit, but also a habit that ruins your nose health. You should be especially careful these days, when the novel coronavirus infection is getting worse day by day. CNN Health recently warned that the habit of digging the nose could carry the virus and be fatal to health.

Unhealthy Habit:’Break Your Nose’

Professor Paul Pottinger of Washington Medical School said, “If you touch something after you break your nose, you can spread your bacteria and viruses to others.” If you touch something that someone touches, “the germs are spread from your fingertips to your nose.” It can spread the coronavirus to others, and it can increase the risk of getting viruses such as influenza. In other words, the act of digging the nose can threaten the health of not only’I’ but also’others’.

The three main ways viruses enter the human body are infections through the eyes, mouth and nose. The nose is a body organ that prevents the invasion of bad foreign substances, and the mucous membrane in the nose protects health by preventing the inflow of fine substances such as pollen, dust, bacteria, and viruses from the outside.

However, if you dig your nose, these defenses may not work properly. Excessive or sharp fingernails dig your nose to hurt the delicate nasal mucosa. Injured mucous membranes do not prevent the penetration of viruses and bacteria, which are the causes of respiratory diseases, and eventually increase the risk of disease.

How to manage snot?

Instead of digging your nose with your fingers, it’s a good idea to wash your nose with normal saline or blow your nose with a tissue. Since the snot is caused by the drying of the mucous membrane of the nose, the nasal mucosa can be kept moist by washing the nose to wash out secretions and substances that cause inflammation. However, if you wash your nose with too high pressure, pain may occur or water may flow back, so you need to wash with an appropriate pressure.

Care should also be taken for saline storage. Hydak Medication Consultation Pharmacist Hyun-cheol Cho said about the saline management method, “since there is no preservative in the saline solution for nasal washing, you must use it within 3 to 4 days after opening, and it is better to throw away any excess.” In addition, he explained, “Even if you put it in the refrigerator, it is better not to extend the period of use because you are concerned about the breeding of microorganisms that can grow at low temperatures.
