Young people must react against the slave trade: Pope Francis

On February 8th, the ninth global day of prayer against the slave trade, Pope Francis delivered a video message against this evil that undermines human dignity.

Fr. Jinu Jacob, Vatican City

With awareness against the slave trade, nine years ago, the memory day of St. Josephine Bakitha from Sudan started to be celebrated on February 8 as the Global Day of Prayer for No Slave Trade. Then every year on this day, the Pope’s message was received with importance by the people.

In his 2023 message, Pope Francis emphasizes this year’s theme of ‘Walking Together for Dignity’ and the idea of involving young people.

Emphasizing that the ultimate abolition of the slave trade is human dignity, the Pope reminds the youth to join hands for good in this era of instability, such as wars, terrorism, and climate change. For this reason, Pope VIII said that the light that the young people receive voluntarily in Rome should be transformed into the light that burns from Christ and his Gospel in their lives.

The Pope wished that we would be able to join together without keeping anyone behind, to understand others with open eyes, to find others with an attentive heart, to read the steps against slavery with hope, and thus to move forward with each other’s hands. For this, may God bless us, may the Holy Mother be with us, and may the Holy Bakitha help us to pray with us and for us, the Pope concluded.
