Young mother arrested after death of two-year-old son

A 22-year-old woman from Mechelen was arrested by the Mechelen investigating judge for unintentional manslaughter during the week. The mother found her child unconscious in his crib. He may have been in a too warm room for too long.

The facts took place in the middle of last week in an apartment close to the football stadium of KV Mechelen. The woman was busy with the oldest child when she found that her two-year-old son was lying unconscious in his crib. She then raised the alarm with the emergency services. They started another resuscitation in vain. The child would have shown symptoms of dehydration, perhaps it had been in a too warm room for too long.

The mother was interrogated and placed under arrest by the investigating judge. The preliminary classification is accidental homicide. The woman must appear before the council chamber in Mechelen on Tuesday, which will decide on her further arrest.

Doctors emphasize that children under the age of three are especially more sensitive to the heat than adults. “That’s because their system for regulating their own body temperature is still immature,” said the Agency for Care and Health. ‘Babies can only sweat to a limited extent and therefore develop a fever more quickly. If they can no longer lose their heat to the environment, the temperature will continue to rise and there is a risk of overheating or drying out. ‘
