Young bottlenose whale dead and with injuries found near Borssele | NOW

A bottlenose whale that was wanted in the Western Scheldt was found dead near Borssele on Tuesday evening. The youngster had a large wound and was missing the tail. The animal may have died in a collision, reports SOS Dolphin.

The organization writes that the calf will be transferred to Utrecht University for further investigation.

On Monday, another dead bottlenose whale was found on the beach in Terneuzen. That may have been the mother of the bottlenose whale found Tuesday. There was probably also a collision here.

It is very rare that bottlenose whales, which belong to the beaked whales, are found in Dutch waters. The marine mammals normally live in deep seas, where they hunt giant squid at a depth of 2 to 3 kilometers.

In recent weeks, several bottlenose whales washed up in European waters. Most animals did not survive this, reported the organization previously to NU.nl.
