Heartbreak in Baltimore: Holliday Homer Denies Yamamoto No-Hitter, Orioles Walk Off
Yoshinobu Yamamoto came within one out of a historic no-hitter, but a ninth-inning home run by Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jackson Holliday sparked a dramatic, walk-off victory for the Orioles over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers saw a 3-0 lead evaporate in a stunning finish.
Yamamoto, pitching with electric form, held the Orioles hitless through 8.2 innings, amassing 112 pitches in the outing. Holliday broke up the bid with a solo home run to deep right field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Following the home run, Yamamoto was replaced by reliever Blake Treinen and received a standing ovation from the crowd. Though, the momentum had shifted. Treinen allowed the Orioles to load the bases, scoring a run on a walk. Tanner Scott then entered the game and surrendered a walk-off RBI single to Emmanuel Rivera, driving in Jorge Mateo and Gunnar Henderson to secure the 4-3 win for Baltimore.
Despite the heartbreaking result, Yamamoto enjoyed a career night. He threw 10 strikeouts and completed seven innings for the first time in his MLB career, coming close to his first complete game since joining the dodgers in 2024.
The Dodgers had built their lead earlier in the game with a Shohei Ohtani RBI single in the third inning, and two RBIs from Mookie Betts – a single in the fifth and a triple in the seventh.
Yamamoto has previously achieved no-hitters,having thrown them in consecutive seasons (2022 & 2023) while playing for the Orix Buffaloes in Nippon Professional Baseball.
The loss marks the Dodgers’ fifth consecutive defeat. Following a sweep by the Pittsburgh Pirates last week, Los Angeles now faces the possibility of being swept by the Orioles.
