“Yes” wins in the referendum

Today some opponents took to the streets again in Lausanne and Bern: on the outskirts of the federal square, closed by the police, they shouted “Freedom, freedom, freedom” and rang the bells.

The referendum, launched by three anti-pass committees, targeted the amendment of the law by which Parliament introduced the legal basis for the Covid certificate in March. In Switzerland, this document certifies a cure, a complete vaccination or a negative test, and since 13 September it is mandatory in restaurants, cultural and sports facilities and other indoor events.

Under certain conditions, employers may introduce its use as a protective measure. The change also affects the contact tracing system and the extension of financial aid for sectors, businesses and individuals affected by the impact of the pandemic. While fears about the Omicron variant are growing in the country, the victory in the polls is a relief for the authorities. In recent weeks, there has also been a sharp increase in infections in Switzerland and the share of people totally vaccinated does not exceed 65%. Also today the Swiss approved the popular initiative to improve the conditions of nurses and nurses with 61% of votes in favor. A result also favored by the pandemic which sees health personnel at the forefront.
