For many, he is considered the best Swiss footballer of all time. Most of the games Chappi played for BVB, with whom he won the 1997 Champions League.

But also with YB coach Gerardo Seoane (left). Spycher says: “With us everything is teamwork.”

Of course, he does not go through that hidden and secret, YB chief scout Stéphane Chapuisat (51) and 103-time national player and Champions League winner with BVB, who is considered by many to be the best Swiss footballer of all time. An audience of millions watched him in December 2020 when he pulled the eighth-final pairings of the Champions League for Uefa.
–
Chappi is the eye of YB. And the man who keeps his thumb up or down in the event of a potential YB move. Thanks to his unmistakable eye, YB has a squad in which the backup plays regularly for a position, because he is only barely weaker than number one. So YB can spin out seven players – and still win. Last example: The (supposedly) first guard loses the Cup round of 16 in St. Gallen 1: 4. The second beats the same eastern Swiss 2-0 three days later.
–
“With us everything is teamwork”
Chappi’s commitment was a basic requirement for Spycher to even start the job as head of sports in 2016. «I asked Stéphane if he wanted to go through with it one hundred percent. He said yes, ”recalls Spycher. Since then, the former BVB star has gained massive importance at YB.
–
Chappi’s judgment alone is not enough. Spycher: “With us, everything is teamwork. We always have several people looking at players in order to get a complete picture. ” Above all, it is the judgment of two other members of the YB Sports Commission that is used to form opinions. And both exude as much calmness as Chappi and as much wisdom as Yoda from “Star Wars”: Head of training Gérard Castella (67), original Genevan and last Servette master trainer. And the Winterthur Ernst Graf (72), head of the sports commission.
–
Last year Graf said something remarkable about YB about the “Bern Bear”: “Envy is a foreign word here.” Not only the family, the YB family. And, yes: The two very clever pensioners are just as anti-gossip as Chappi.
–
First the player type is determined
Back to the eye of YB, the more sinister than secret chief scout because of his low transfer error rate. How does he do it that he so rarely trumps himself when assessing the potential of players? Anyone who expects David Copperfield’s magic tricks is completely wrong. But let’s start at the beginning.
–
“First, the coach and head of sports determine which types of players we are looking for,” says Chappi. “Then we create an initial list that we shorten down to around three names. We’ll make the decision together as to which player we want to sign. The trainer is there too. And of course the financial aspects have to be taken into account. That is why board chairman Hanspeter Kienberger is always involved. ”
–
A fundamental difference to FC Bayern, for example, where the coach is not that heavily involved. Let alone to FC Sion. There one or the other wish of the trainer will be fulfilled one-to-one if possible. But the president also repeatedly puts players in front of the coach without asking.
–
Siebatcheu’s example
Let’s do a YB example: Jordan Siebatcheu. Chappi: «I found him while looking at another player from Reims. But the first choice is often not feasible for Swiss clubs. Siebatcheu was also outside our price range. I kept an eye on it, knowing that we might have to borrow it first. When that became foreseeable, I made the first contact. In this case, I flew to France. After this initial interview, I try to assess whether this could be something for us. If so, we’ll let him come to Bern. Then the final decision is made. It’s always about recognizing and correctly assessing the person behind the player. “
–
But how does Chappi find these players? How does he put together his first list? «We drive in multiple lanes. We no longer have a budget for external scouts. That was saved. In Switzerland, three people are watching the games. Then there is my network. We also pass on the profile we are looking for to consultants who we know know our framework conditions. And I dive deep into the databases, especially Wyscout and InStat. For the preselection, these scouting platforms have massively increased in weight because we are much less often in the stadiums than we used to be. Which, on the other hand, also minimizes the risk, because it happened again and again that you flew somewhere because of a player – and he was only used for the last five minutes. “
–
That is the killer criterion
But, and there are no compromises at YB: «The first contact with the player takes place physically. This personal conversation to assess whether a player fits our philosophy or not is essential. ” What is the killer criterion there? “It’s about the character of the player.”
–
The chief scout’s job is done when it comes to contracts and numbers. And then Chappi can calmly watch the games of his own team at Spycher’s side from the stands, like today. Because this moment is almost relaxation for a head scout.
