Yankees Miss Postseason as Aaron Judge Reflects on Captaincy and Playoff Absence

NEW YORK.— The last time the Yankees of New York missed the postseason, Aaron Judge was a hitter with a .179 average and just 27 games of experience in 2016.

Now he is about to complete his first year as captain of the Yankees who have not been able to qualify with the expanded playoff format.

A year after the Yankees won 99 games and Judge hit 62 home runs to break Roger Maris’ single-season record in the American League, New York was mathematically eliminated by succumbing 7-1 on a rainy Sunday to the Diamondbacks. Zac Gallen earned his 17th victory of the season with Arizona.

“It’s tough,” said Judge, whose bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning produced the Yankees’ lone run.

“Every year I’ve been in New York we went to the postseason. It will be something a little different this winter, but it will allow us to work a little harder and be better for next time.”

Arizona (82-73) won for the sixth time in seven games and remains in position to obtain the second wild card berth in the National League, with a half-game lead over the Chicago Cubs. Additionally, the Diamondbacks secured their first winning season since 2019.

Hit by multiple injuries, New York (78-77) was eliminated with a week left. The Yankees head into a tour of Toronto and Kansas City with the risk of ending the season with a poor record for the first time since 1992.

The Yankees will finish with 85 wins if they finish with a 7-0 streak. Baltimore (97 wins) and Tampa Bay (95) will split the AL East and a wild card berth, and Toronto (87) is in position to claim the second wild card spot.

Texas (86) can win the West or enter as a wild card in a race that includes Seattle (84) or Houston (85). Because the Astros and Mariners play three times in the final week, one will end up with more wins than the Yankees.

New York activated the injured list 37 times. Judge missed nearly eight weeks with the sprained right big toe he suffered on June 3 at Dodger Stadium. The Yankees were 10-23 without Judge and 24-29 after his return.

“A lot of things went wrong,” Judge said. “Different aspects can be mentioned, but the summary of everything is that we did not know how to do our job.”

Tommy Pham and Christian Walker hit consecutive sacrifice flies in the first inning against Carlos Rodón (3-7) and that was enough for Gallen, second in victories in the National.

For the Diamondbacks, Venezuelan Gabriel Moreno was 2-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI. Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. 3-0.

For the Yankees, Venezuelans Gleyber Torres 5-1; Oswaldo Cabrera 4-1; and Oswald Peraza 4-0. Dominican Estevan Floral 4-1.
