Yamaha Racing Team Director Lin Jarvis confirmed that his party had reached an agreement with Andrea Dovizioso to duet together Valentino Rossi from MotoGP 2021.
Jarvis confirmed this to the official MotoGP website ahead of the 2021 British MotoGP race at the Silverstone Circuit, Sunday (29/8).
Jarvis said Yamaha had negotiated to sign Dovizioso from the 2021 San Marino MotoGP at the Misano Circuit, 19 September, until the 2022 MotoGP. Jarvis confirmed that there was an agreement with Dovizioso, but there was no official signature yet.
Dovizioso, who decided to take a hiatus after the 2020 MotoGP, is projected to strengthen the Petronas Yamaha satellite team for the remainder of the 2021 MotoGP season and the new Yamaha satellite team next season.
“Yes, [Dovizioso di Petronas Yamaha] almost certain. We have reached an agreement with Dovizioso and his management. However, nothing has been signed yet. But I’m sure there won’t be any more obstacles,” Jarvis said Motorsport.
“Our plan is to make [Franco] Morbidelli as a factory team rider and Dovizioso raced with a satellite team from the San Marino MotoGP and also in 2022,” said Jarvis.
If Yamaha is officially contracted from the San Marino MotoGP, then Dovizioso will be Valentino Rossi’s teammate in the last five races of The Doctor before retiring from MotoGP.
Dovizioso is currently under contract as Aprilia’s test driver. The Italian racer was widely rumored to be Aprilia’s racer next season, before the Italian factory team signed Maverick Vinales as the team’s driver starting MotoGP 2021.
Dovizioso has one season of experience riding a Yamaha M1 motorcycle in MotoGP 2012 by strengthening the Tech3 satellite team.
Dovizioso’s appearance with the Yamaha M1 in MotoGP 2012 was quite impressive with a score of six podiums and finishing in fourth position in the final standings.
