Manufacturers regularly apply for patents for technologies that may be used in the future. For example, Xiaomi has now applied for a patent for a smartphone camera that can rotate inside the housing. For example, one camera can be used on both the front and the back of a smartphone.
The website LetsGoDigital has made an illustration of Xiaomi’s patent. In the patent, Xiaomi describes a camera module that can be placed inside a smartphone and turn itself over. This would allow one camera to be used as a selfie camera and as a rear camera. In the illustration we see that one camera of the triple rear camera can turn over and be used as an under-display selfie camera.
It is still unclear whether and when Xiaomi will equip a smartphone with this technology. It often happens that manufacturers apply for a patent without planning to use this technology in the short term.
