Microsoft recently unveiled its next generation gaming console, the Xbox Series X. The first people to be closest to it, of course, were the YouTube tech community. Austin Evans, a notable name in the community, took a closer look at the console, giving us all a great idea of what to expect from the next generation.
Here are the biggest points to remember from Austin’s first look at the Xbox Series X.
Xbox Series X hardware
The most notable thing about the design of the console is how trivial it is. It’s basically a box, but it can be the smartest part of the whole device. The new Xbox incorporates a huge amount of computing power into what is essentially a rectangular box.
It has an AMD Zen 2 processor, with 8 cores, clocked at 3.8 GHz permanently. 7 of the cores are generally used for games, while the last core is reserved for maintaining the operating system and background processes. The new CPU architecture also allows developers to focus more on 6 multi-threaded processors, or 8 fast cores at a time.
The biggest improvement of the new console is its 1 TB SSD. This is a considerable increase compared to slow hard drives of the previous generation. Data can now be transferred to and from the SSD at a rate of 2.4 gigabytes per second.
The system also houses the new AMD RDNA 2 graphics configuration, with 16 gigabytes of GDDR6 RAM. It should be noted here that the PS5 also uses a very similar GPU configuration.

The new controller
As usual for Microsoft at this point, there has also been an update for Xbox controllers for this generation. Austin spent a lot of time examining the new technology, comparing it to previous iterations of the same controllers.
The new controllers are better suited for small hands. The top of the controller is a little narrower, which allows small hands to better grasp it. In addition, the most visible update concerns the D-Pad. The d-pad has been refreshed, with better formed and separate buttons. Evans commented on this, stating that the buttons looked clicked, making it a better overall experience.
Heat flow and internal design
Although the Xbox Series X isn’t a curvy, foreign-looking device like the PS5, its design has given a lot of thought. Specifically, the positioning of the fans, the air intake at the top and the internal power supply all work to facilitate the smallest and most powerful game machine possible.
The custom fans, massive steam chamber, and positioning of the air inlets are all evidence of excellent engineering behind the console. Until a direct comparison or benchmark can be made, the power of the Xbox Series X cannot be estimated. However, from what we’ve seen so far, the new Xbox will surely be a quiet and cool system in your living room.
The Xbox series laid the foundation for the next generation of consoles. The PS5 can certainly have a more unique design, but the “box” of the Xbox impresses all the same.
