Xbox Series S: First information leaked about the new budget Xbox

It has been around for a long time that Microsoft is planning not just one, but at least two next-gen consoles. The Xbox Series X is therefore a weaker console alongside, which is developed under the project name “Lockhart”. Their technical specifications have now been leaked.

An entry in the developer kit for the Xbox Series X serves as further confirmation of a “Lockhart” console, which the Xbox One S is to inherit as an entry-level model in the console family. There, a Lockhart profile is mentioned, which corresponds to the intended performance level of the small ones new Xbox matches.

According to information from The Verge the speed of the processor is reduced somewhat by a slight clock reduction. The Series S has to accept major limitations in terms of memory. In addition to the area reserved for the operating system, developers only have 7.5 gigabytes available there, while the Series X offers 13.5 gigabytes of freely assignable RAM.

The performance of the graphics chip is also greatly reduced. Instead of 12, it will only achieve a computing power of 4 teraflops. This would make it three times more powerful than its counterpart in the Xbox One S, but weaker than the graphics unit in the Xbox One X. You can also expect a smaller or slower hard drive. The latter option, however, seems unlikely, since fast or no loading times have been announced as an essential feature of the new consoles.

Technically, the Xbox Series S should offer most of the technical innovations of the next console generation. This should provide enough power for either 1080p or 1440p resolution. It would also be conceivable that frame rates of 60 FPS on the Series S are only offered as an option or not for every game.

Series S and X are available at the same time

The publication is also interesting: According to the current status, the Xbox Series S should come on the market parallel to the larger model, unless Microsoft decides otherwise at the last minute, writes The Verge relying on informed circles. You can replace the Xbox One S All Digital Edition, which is also offered for a monthly fee including the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Alternatively, a low-priced entry-level model allows the usual price point of new consoles to be shifted up with a “premium model”. In fact, neither Microsoft nor competitor Sony have yet commented on the prices of their consoles. This suggests that this information cannot be used to advertise, which indicates a rather high price.
