X-ray of the deaths in Granada during a fateful 2020

The latest statistical data on mortality in the province of Granada once again reveals the magnitude of the tragedy posed by the SARS Cov 19 pandemic. In 2020, according to information compiled by the Andalusian Institute of Statistics and Cartography (ACE), ended with 9,401 deaths in Granada. The previous year there were 7,832 and, according to the data of the portal – which has been provided by statistics since 2009 – never had more than 8,300 deaths been exceeded. The elevation of the data can be attributed to the incidence of the coronavirus. The Covid killed 1,217 people from Granada, 13% of the total deaths registered in the province. By the way, Grenada has been particularly hit by the pandemic. Only Seville had more deaths from Covid (1,358).

The ACEI allows the data to be broken down by quarters, which allows us to see the incidence of the first two waves of infections in the number of deaths. In the first quarter (which includes March, the month in which the state of alarm was declared), there were 94 deaths attributed to the Covid in Granada. The total number of deaths in those first three months of the year was 2,366. In the second quarter, when Granada – like the rest of Spain – was confined and mobility restrictions were very severe, the global death toll was significantly lower than that registered in the previous quarter. Between April, May and June 2,108 people from Granada perished, of which 204 were victims of Covid. The first wave was extremely harsh in the older population.

The successive phases of the de-escalation allowed greater mobility and the recovery, albeit progressively, of activities that were put on hold due to the first state of alarm. Summer came and this resulted in low contagion rates. Less infections, fewer deaths. Between July, August and September, there were 51 deaths in Granada attributed to Covid, four times less than during the first wave, when the pandemic caught a society without means, protective equipment or hardly any knowledge, which was stunned by the spread of the new disease .

Already in summer the experts warned that a second wave of infections would arrive. Despite the fact that there was more protective equipment and the use of the mask had become very widespread, infections soared. October was a black month. The spread of the virus even forced drastic measures, such as the suspension of face-to-face theoretical teaching at the University of Granada. On October 25, 2020, a second state of alarm was approved, and once again Granada was confined, with severe mobility restrictions, a curfew and the closure of non-essential establishments. The second wave rode, however, at a gallop: in the last quarter of the year, from October to December, Granada accumulated 868 deaths, according to the IECA, due to Covid. The data supposes multiplying by four the mortality of the first wave. The 868 deaths in this second wave are also 70% of the deaths from coronavirus for the entire year.

On the other hand, cancer was the main cause of death in the province, with more than 1,800 deaths of the 9.401 with whom the exercise was closed. Tumors of the trachea, bronchi and lung caused 387 fatalities, while 204 people from Granada perished from colon cancer.

The diseases cerebrovascular They were behind 570 deaths, while another 560 people from Granada lost their lives after suffering a heart attack. Another 381 deaths were recorded due to heart failure and the heart was behind another 436 deaths. Thus, cardiovascular problems were the second cause of death in 2020 in the province.

Rise in suicides

The statistics recently published by the Andalusian Institute of Statistics and Cartography (IECA) reflects an increase in deaths by suicide among the population of Granada. If in 2019 this was the cause of 85 deaths in the province, throughout 2020 a total of 107 people decided to end their lives. This represents a growth of 20% year-on-year. Possibly the pandemic could have been behind this increase. If in the first quarter of last year there were 24 suicidal deaths, between April and June – when the measures to stop contagions were more restrictive – there were 31. In the fourth In the quarter of the year, 29 suicides were recorded in the province and in the fourth, for which data have now been provided, there were another 23. Another aspect of the statistic that stands out is that related to deaths on the road. If in the previous year there were 23 people from Granada who lost their lives in traffic accidents, in 2020 –despite restrictions on mobility– there were 34, eleven more than in the previous year. The quarterly data do reflect that during the months of confinement there was a decrease in mortality from traffic accidents: from six deaths on the road in the first quarter, it went to four. However, the last half year the rebound was remarkable. In the summer months, between July and September, there were twelve deaths, triple the number in the previous quarter. Between October and December – with the second state of alarm – there were after twelve deaths due to accidents on the road.
