WYC crew at the start in Überlingen

Friedrichshafen (wb) – The 2021 season of the German sailing league starts with a one-month delay: From June 18 to 20, Überlingen will be sailing – a kind of home game for the Württemberg Yacht Club (WYC). According to the press release, Dennis Mehlig, Yannick Hafner, Lukas Ammon and Justin Venger will compete for this.

All four have already sailed together in different compositions at league events in 2020. “With Justin we have a very young sailor in the team of veterans”, team manager Klaus Diesch remains true to the line of constantly introducing young sailors to the league. Last weekend there was another intensive training session with other Lake Constance teams in the Überlinger Revier.

The training races were held in league format – six boats in one start for a race lasting 20 minutes. “That gives a certain routine and security,” says Diesch. He is happy that coach Jochen Frik will look after the boys in training and also at the event. The entire league team was able to complete a number of training days at home this year. “They could do the top five,” says Klaus Diesch, setting the goal.

It is the ninth season in the first division for the Württemberg Yacht Club – the “Häfler” have been part of the Bundesliga since it was founded. Six events are planned for the 2021 season: Hamburg, Kiel-Schilksee, twice Berlin and Warnemünde are still on the calendar.

The current forecast for Überlingen promises midsummer weather during the week, which could lead to a certain tendency to thunderstorms from Friday. A “reliable” wind forecast is thus possible: From calm it can quickly switch to thunderstorm gusts. “We have to be prepared for everything and wish the Überlingers good luck in the race committee”, said Klaus Diesch.

The first races are planned for Friday noon. On Saturday and Sunday the races will be under www.segelbundesliga.de broadcast live and with commentary from 12 noon. However, Klaus Diesch is counting on a few fans from Friedrichshafen to find their way to Überlinger Osthafen as part of the Corona conditions and cheering on the WYC team on site.
