WWE Friday Night SmackDown #1090
Venue: WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, USA
US first broadcast: July 10, 2020
The commentators Michael Cole and Corey Graves welcome us to a new edition of “Friday Night SmackDown”. They give an outlook on tonight and mention that besides the announced matches and segments there will also be a “karaoke showdown” between Naomi, Dana Brooke, Lacey Evans and Tamina. Well then…
Meanwhile, John Morrison & The Miz have made themselves comfortable in the ring to present their talk show “MizTV”. They introduce their guest Jeff Hardy today. While The Miz tries to moderate Hardy as seriously as possible, Morrison makes fun of him because he assumed that today’s “MizTV” episode was not meant seriously due to the guest. When Hardy arrived in the ring, The Miz apologized for Morrison’s comments. The latter, on the other hand, apologizes for his partner, who obviously misinterpreted his anticipation for Jeff. Then they ask Jeff to watch his video clip. Jeff, slightly annoyed, makes it clear that he did not bring a video clip with him, after which the moderators believe that they have a video about Jeff in their luggage. We take a look at the previous feud between Jeff and Sheamus, which has so far not been particularly successful for Jeff. The Miz & John Morrison make fun of it afterwards. After all, once a hero has gotten rid of his own demons, he usually ends up as a winner. But Jeff Hardy seems to go an unusual way, after all, Sheamus was able to defeat Jeff with “WWE Backlash”.
The Miz explains that Jeff is his little daughter’s favorite superstar. He doesn’t really like it because he doesn’t want his daughter to look up to someone who is constantly destroying himself. Miz & Morrison wonder how hard Jeff is struggling with the loss to Sheamus. He makes it clear that both the defeat and Sheamus himself are pulling hard on his nerve costume. He really wants to defeat Sheamus and finally leave the whole thing behind. He does this for people who are struggling with problems similar to his. The former WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions more or less agree with their guests and explain that Jeff must definitely defeat Sheamus in a rematch, for example in a bar fight. Jeff realizes that The Miz & John Morrison want to embarrass Jeff Hardy and do it for Sheamus, but he accepts the challenge. In return, he wants to compete against The Miz or John Morrison. These have made fun of him, which is why he will now hit them in the face. This creates a short brawl that Jeff can decide for himself.
Jeff Hardy won against The Miz (w / John Morrison) via pin after a rollerball, previously Sheamus distracted Jeff Hardy.
Match Time: 14:15
Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura are interviewed in the backstage area by Sarah Schreiber about their title match today. She comments on Nakamura’s win against Kofi Kingston and describes it as a “surprise success”, which annoys Cesaro & Nakamura. They make fun of The New Day (Big E & Kofi Kingston) and promise that they will win the Tag Team titles today.
As WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Sasha Banks & Bayley go to the ring, Nikki Cross attacks WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley. The two rivals then fight to the ring.
We see Dana Brooke preparing for the “karaoke showdown”.
(Non-Title) Tag Team Match
Bayley & Sasha Banks won against Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross via pin through Bayley against Nikki Cross after a single roller. During the final roll up, Bayley used the ring ropes to reinforce the cover.
Match time: 12:15
The WWE Universal Championship Match between Braun Strowman (c) and Bray Wyatt from this year’s “WWE Money in the Bank” PPV is now broadcast.
WWE Universal Championship
Braun Strowman (c) won against Bray Wyatt via pin after the running powerslam.
Match Time: 10:44
– Bray Wyatt fought the fight as announced in his “Firefly Fun House” persona and not as “The Fiend”.
– During the match, Huskus The Pig Boy, Ramblin Rabbit & Abby The Witch appeared and caused distractions.
– Braun Strowman pulls out his black sheep mask known from the Wyatt family under the ring. After a hug and scenes that Wyatt interpreted as a kind of reunion, Braun removed the mask. The Powerslam followed to the finish.
The WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day are also interviewed by Sarah Schreiber. They highlight Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura as great performers, but Big E & Kofi Kingston will defend their titles today.
Lacey Evans and Naomi are also training for the karaoke showdown.
For this host Jey Uso went to the ring. Lacey Evans performs “With My Baby Tonight” by Road Dogg & Jeff Jarrett, Dana Brooke presents her version of the Honky Tonk Man theme, Tamina gives Triple H’s “The Game” for the (more or less) best and Naomi closes the quartet of musical interludes with Dusty Rhodes’ entrance music. The audience choose Naomi as the winner, which Lacey Evans doesn’t like at all. That is why it comes as it must come: Brawl, Brawl (here by Jey Uso) is prevented, commercial break, match.
Naomi vs. Lacey Evans ended in a double DQ after all four women fought in the ring.
Match time: 01:45
– Lacey Evans messed with Dana Brooke and Tamina outside the ring. Then Dana Brooke and Tamina Naomi and Lacey Evans attacked in the ring and there was a brawl between the four women.
WWE Intercontinental Champion AJ Styles is interviewed by Sarah Schreiber. Styles highlights his successful title defense against Drew Gulak from the previous week and makes it clear that there is no one left to defend his title against. Schreiber informs Styles that he will defend his title again next week … against Matt Riddle! AJ is not happy about this news and asks what Riddle has done to earn a title match. Schreiber then points out Styles to his defeat against Riddle.
WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship
Tag Team Match
The New Day (Big E & Kofi Kingston, c) vs. Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura ended in a double DQ after all four men fought in the ring.
Match Time: 12:50
After the match, Cesaro grabs a table and sets it up in the ring. The heels can eventually gain the upper hand in the ring. Big E is placed on the table and Kofi Kingston from Cesaro is transported through Big E and the table with a Middle Rope Powerbomb. SmackDown ends with these images.
