13 weeks have passed since the first patient tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus was treated at the Würzburg Mitte Clinic (KWM). According to the press release, the clinic management is now taking stock. According to the press release, it shows that the risk of infection is no greater in a hospital than anywhere else.
“After more than 40 patients were treated individually in our clinics at the time of the outbreak, at the same time because of Covid 19 disease or suspected of being isolated, the situation has now eased,” says Dr. med. Johann Paula, Director of Medicine at KWM. Since the first outbreaks of the virus in Germany, he has headed the KWM’s internal crisis team and is also involved in the regional, cross-agency and clinic-wide fight against pandemics within the framework of the disaster management management group.
There are currently five patients with Covid 19 disease in hospital treatment at the KWM.
No infection during the hospital stay
“No patient who has been admitted to one of our clinics has been shown to contract the coronavirus during his stay,” explains Paula. “This is mainly thanks to the strong cooperation of the entire KWM team. All employees have actively informed themselves about hygiene and protective measures and implemented them precisely. For example, in the past few weeks, the hospital hygiene team has trained around 500 employees specifically with regard to Corona been. ”
The risk of infection is therefore not higher in the hospital than in other areas of life. If you experience acute health problems, such as signs of a stroke or heart attack, you should act immediately and do not hesitate for fear of being infected with the corona virus.
Few employees infected
In total, just under 1.4 percent of all KWM employees tested positive for the corona virus. “With this infection rate, we are below the nationwide average,” said Paula. According to the Robert Koch Institute, the rate of positive tests in Germany is currently 1.5 percent (as of May 28, 2020). “No infection of a KWM employee can be traced back to patient contacts. The sources of infection are diverse and are mostly suspected in the private environment.”
“Corona will continue to determine our processes in the clinics for a long time to come, but we are confident that the first acute wave of infections is behind us,” says Paula. But even if the clinics are gradually returning to regular operations, strict protection and hygiene measures continue to apply. For example, the mask requirement, which has been in force since March, continues to apply to all persons who are in the clinic building. In addition, beds in the normal and intensive care units are kept free so that Covid 19 patients can be taken in at any time and treated in isolation.
