Using observations from telescopes at several locations in the United States and Mexico, the research team observed Pluto and its thin atmosphere, which is mainly made of nitrogen, like that on Earth.
Experts have found that if the ice heats up on Pluto, it can change the density of its atmosphere.
For about 25 years, Pluto has been moving further away from the Sun, so its surface temperature has decreased.

Coupled with recent observations, scientists have found evidence to suggest that atmosfer Pluto actually freezes back onto its surface as the dwarf planet gets colder.
Pluto is very far from the Sun, so over time, Pluto will get colder and farther away before approaching the Sun in other regions of its orbit.
Thanks to a phenomenon known as thermal inertia, Pluto’s surface pressure and atmospheric density continued to increase through 2018.
Basically, Pluto has residual heat since it is close to the Sun.
However, inertia begins to decrease and as Pluto gets colder, more of its frozen atmosphere returns to its surface and disappears.

“The continued persistence of Pluto’s atmosphere indicates that the nitrogen ice reservoir on Pluto’s surface is kept warm by the heat stored beneath the surface,” said Leslie Young, a scientist from the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI).
