The commercial port of Viana do Castelo registered an increase, between January and November 2019, of 9.3%, in what concerns the movement of ships, it was announced today by AMT.

It was also one of the national ports to present “an export port profile”, registering a volume of cargo shipped higher than that of landed cargo, with a quotient between cargo shipped and the total handled, in the period under analysis, of 63.8 %.

At the national level, the continent’s commercial ports handled, in the same period, a total of 80 million tons, which represents a 5.8% drop compared to the same period in 2018.

Regarding the movement of ships at national level, compared to the period January to November 2018, the first 11 months of 2019 registered an increase of 0.7% in the number of calls (9,811 calls) and a decrease in the volume of gross tonnage of 0 , 2% (to about 188.9 million).

The port of Lisbon was the one that most influenced this growth, registering a year-on-year increase of 157 calls (+ 7%), followed by the ports of Douro and Leixões with 25 more calls (1.1%), Viana do Castelo with 16 more calls (9.3%) and Sines with another 10 (0.5%).

According to a report by the Mobility and Transport Authority (AMT), between January and November last year, 4.96 million tonnes were handled in the ports of mainland Portugal, compared to the same period last year.

Comparing only the figures for November 2018 and 2019, there was a slight increase of 0.2%.

The ports of Viana do Castelo, Leixões and Setúbal showed positive behavior, with a combined growth of 550 thousand tons.

The port of Sines is one of those responsible for the negative performance, as it registered a global drop of 5.25 million tons, but continues to maintain the leadership of the container segment, with a share corresponding to 52.2% of the total.

Despite the drop in cargo movements, the port of Sines continues to lead the volume of cargo handled, with a share of 48.2%, followed by Leixões (22.4%), Lisbon (13.1%), Setúbal ( 7.3%) and Aveiro (6.2%).

Of the remaining ports with negative behavior, the report highlights the port of Aveiro, which in the period from January to November 2019 recorded a decrease of 2.2%, as a result of a 32% year-on-year drop in November.

According to the AMT report, shipping operations between January and November 2019 “were deeply influenced by the Containerized Cargo markets of Sines, Leixões, Lisbon and Setúbal, the Petroleum Products of Sines and Leixões, the Other Solid Bulks in Setúbal and Lisbon and Fractional Cargo in Leixões, which represented 80% of the total cargo shipped ”.

Regarding unloading operations, the document highlights the positive variation of Petroleum Products in Sines, with an increase of 2.4 million tons (47.4% more), representing 68.4% of the total positive variations.
