“World’s Most Successful Tap School Proudly Located in Brno” – News

In a building in an industrial area on the outskirts of Brno, few would expect a dance school of world renown. However, T-Group, the most successful school in the world in terms of the number of medals from the last world championship, is located here.

Its dancers, for example, have obtained more precious metals than tap dancers from the entire United States. Košir, its founder, boss, choreographer, coach, visionary and dancer, recently turned 22.

When asked what sets his school apart from the competition, he has a clear answer.

“It’s in the style of work. We give the opportunity for people to develop in their own way, but at the same time to meet basic milestones such as technical proficiency or dance basics. We are no longer a standard club, we are more of a community where people like to hang out. Most of our members are not even 18 years old yet and they push each other for better results,” Košir described.

When training world champions, of which there are already several in the Brno studio in addition to Košir, not only drill, but also an understanding of dance is essential.

“Besides the technique, the choreography and image are also evaluated, part of that is how the dancer can convince the jury that he is serious about what he taps. It’s actually a combination of dance and acting, the tap dancer tells a short story, and we take great care to ensure that our dancers know what they’re tap dancing about,” emphasized Košir.

Step still rather lives on the fringes of interest, while many people associate it with the era of the First Republic or the performances of Jiří Korn.

However, the number of dancers is increasing, interest in tap clubs and schools is growing throughout the country, and according to Košir, it is only a matter of time before it will no longer be possible to ignore it, for example, on the part of big shows or the media.

“We are making our way where the tap dance was a hundred years ago in Czechoslovakia, when it was the main style of the time, to which we still cling. Tap may be an underrated dance form associated with top hats, canes and dog blankets, but today it’s a completely different dance. Modern, predatory, you can dance to anything,” Košir said.

He wants a big show

Although a multiple world champion and head of a respected school, Košir still has no shortage of ambitious projects. He sees inspiration in the world-famous show Lord of the Dance, which has been selling out halls all over the world for years.

“I have 250 people now, and a lot of them have a long time to improve and win. I know exactly what steps I need to take to put together a show like this with them. It’s about organization, a strong team, and I feel that now is the moment to get down to it,” Košir prefaced.

The planned more than one-hour Life time performance can be a sort of prelude. “We are working on how to convey a story, how to express more complex ideas with tap. Our choreography will show the story of a person from birth to death, we will go through the whole life,” explained Košir.

Despite his youth, Košir has experience from almost all over the world, he has worked in famous dance schools, for example in Boston, Milan or Odessa.

And he can also pass on his enthusiasm to the people around him. As he himself says, he is looking forward to the fact that one of his charges will grow over his head, so to speak.

“I will be very happy for it, because such a moment indicates a good coaching and choreographic work. This has to happen, we have to encourage people to be better than we were. And I see that the dancers in our studio who have the strength to surpass me are growing,” concluded Košir.
