Inklings Program Expands to south Australia, Offering Early Support for Families
Adelaide, South Australia – South australian families with infants exhibiting early social and communication variations are poised to gain from a pioneering early intervention program. The Kids Research Institute Australia’s Inklings Program has officially launched in south Australia, marking a notable step forward in early childhood support.
Joint Government Investment fuels Early Intervention
A collaborative investment by the Albanese and Malinauskas Governments underpins the program, designed to empower caregivers in understanding the unique needs of babies aged six to 18 months who present with early developmental differences. the core objective is to bolster families’ capacity to provide optimal support for their children during these crucial formative months.
The Inklings Program employs a novel approach, utilizing short videos of caregivers interacting with their babies. This method aims to enhance parental understanding of their baby’s thoughts and feelings, the diverse modes of infant communication, the importance of interactive engagement, and the importance of aligning with the baby’s focus of interest.
Program Reach and Funding
The $14.8 million initiative is jointly funded by the Department of social Services and the South Australian government, in partnership with The Kids Research Institute Australia. the program’s reach extends across South Australia, encompassing Northern Adelaide, Adelaide metro, regional areas, Lower Eyre, and Far North (both regional and remote communities). This thorough coverage ensures that families throughout the state have access to these vital resources.
Pilot Program Demonstrates Success in Western Australia
The Inklings Program has already demonstrated its effectiveness through a successful pilot program in Western Australia. Families participating in the pilot received invaluable support and resources, highlighting the program’s potential to positively impact early childhood development.
Expert Welcomes expansion
Professor Andrew Whitehouse,Deputy Director at the Kids, expressed his enthusiasm for the program’s expansion into South Australia. The Inklings Program launching in South Australia means that more families will have early support at their fingertips.
He emphasized the critical importance of early intervention, stating, Early support, when it is needed most, will help families at a crucial time in their child’s development, providing long-term benefits for the child’s future.
It’s a great feeling to see the translation of this life-changing research making a difference to families who need support. This is a truly exciting moment for South Australia.

Addressing Barriers to Access
The program’s implementation aligns with a key recommendation from South Australia’s Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care. A central focus will be on dismantling barriers that prevent families from First Nations, culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and low-socioeconomic backgrounds from accessing the program. This commitment to inclusivity ensures that the benefits of early intervention are available to all families in need.
Building on previous Efforts
This initiative represents the second phase of a broader early care strategy, building upon prior initiatives aimed at supporting families during the earliest stages of their child’s development. The inklings Program is a significant step in a continuous effort to provide comprehensive support for South Australian families and their children.
