World champion Carlsen wins own online chess tournament NOW

Magnus Carlsen won the online chess tournament on Sunday that he set up and bears his name. The world champion was too strong for Hikaru Nakamura in the final of the Magnus Carlsen Invitational.

After an exciting 2.5: 1.5 meeting, 29-year-old Carlsen was the worst against the three-year-old American, who occupies eighteenth place in the world ranking. Carlsen triumphed in two of the first three games and then only had a draw to win the tournament.

With his victory, Carlsen raises 70,000 dollars (more than 63,000 euros). The Norwegian decided to set up the digital tournament, because there is no physical chess due to the corona crisis.

A total of seven top chess players were invited, including Anish Giri. The Dutchman managed to beat Carlsen surprisingly in the fifth round a week ago, but the world champion just reached the ‘Final Four’.

The Chinese Ding Liren and the American Fabiano Caruana also reached the semi-finals and are each $ 30,000 (more than 27,000 euros) richer. Giri left approximately 16,000 euros to the Magnus Carlsen Invitational.
