There is a study of breast milk that examines “Glycerol Monolaurate Contributing to the Antimicrobial and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Human Milk”, published in the journal Scientific Reports. This study shows the concentration of glycerol monolaurate (GML) in breast milk is 3,000 micrograms per liter.

GML as a fatty acid monoester with high antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties for infants. The content of GML in breast milk inhibits the growth of pathogens. When GML is removed from breast milk, it loses antibacterial activity against pathogenic elements.

The researchers showed that human milk inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Clostridium perfringens. While cow’s milk and baby formula don’t have any effect.

So, the importance of breast milk in infants to get nutrition, baby development, immunity, and easily digested by the baby’s body. The need for breast milk should not be excessive must be according to the stage of age.

Infants aged 1 day: 7 ml (1 teaspoon) ASI in one drink

Infants 2 days old: 14 ml (2 teaspoons) breast milk in one drink

Infants aged 3 days: 25-38 ml (3-4 tablespoons) breast milk in one drink

Infants 1 week old: 45-60 ml of breast milk in one drink

1 month old baby: 80-150 ml of breast milk in one drink

Infants aged 6 months: 720 ml of breast milk per day

Infants aged 1 year: 550 ml of breast milk per day
