TOKYO – World Athletics Championships organizers have adjusted the start times of road events due to anticipated extreme heat in Tokyo, prioritizing athlete safety. The move comes as temperatures are forecast to consistently exceed 30 degrees Celsius throughout the championships, beginning Saturday, wiht humidity levels expected to make the ”feels like” temperature approach 40 degrees Celsius on some days.
In response to the challenging conditions, World Athletics has shifted the race walk and marathon events forward by 30 minutes. This rescheduling impacts the women’s and men’s 35km race walk on Saturday, the women’s marathon on sunday, and the men’s marathon on Monday.Irish athletes oisin Lane, Fionnuala McCormack, Hiko Tonosa, and Peter Lynch are among those affected by the changes.
To further mitigate the risks posed by the heat, organizers will provide enhanced hydration support for marathon runners, establishing 185 water stations along the course – exceeding the number used at the Tokyo Games.
Ireland has named a team of 28 athletes to compete in the championships,a record-breaking contingent for the nation.
