World AIDS Day, UNAIDS Highlights the Lack of Access to Treatment in Indonesia

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – The United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) says the world will continue to be mired in crisis Covid-19 if leaders are unable to present transformative steps to end AIDS.

Because, Country Director UNAIDS Indonesia, Krittayawan Boonto said there are still millions of people in the world who are left behind regarding the HIV response as a result of social inequality.

This expression appeared in the latest UNAIDS report in commemoration of World AIDS Day on December 1, entitled ‘Unequal, unprepared, under threat: why bold action against inequalities is needed to end AIDS, stop COVID-19 and prepare for future pandemics’.

Report launch UNAIDS Indonesia was held together with the Ministry of Health and the Positive Indonesia Network in Tempo’s virtual activity, Tuesday (30/11/2021).

“There are still millions of people in the world who are left behind in the HIV response because of social inequality,” said Krittayawan.

He said the pandemic Covid-19 further exacerbate HIV prevention, testing, and treatment efforts. The failure could result in 7.7 million deaths during this decade.

“This is further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Failure to improve the outcomes of both HIV prevention, testing and treatment services will result in 7.7 million deaths over this decade,” he explained.

Some countries, including those with the highest HIV rates, have indeed made progress against AIDS.

However, this achievement is not evenly distributed. Globally there will still be 1.5 million new HIV infections in 2020, of which 31 percent are among those aged 15-24 years.
