“I make $450,000 a year, get free food every day, and have unlimited free time. It was Big Tech’s dream,” said Lin.

Lin felt that the first two years of working at Netflix were amazing and he learned a lot, until he started to feel the work was repetitive.

“Then the Covid-19 (pandemic) happened. The office was closed, and all my favorite parts of work — socializing, co-workers — disappeared,” says Lin.

However, his desire to build a network and fill the position of project manager did not materialize because the company did not provide for horizontal position transfer.

Unable to move into the role he wanted, Lin said the high salary was uncomfortable.

“When I started at Netflix, I made a lot of money and kept learning new things. Now, I only make money, with no career advancement,” said Lin.

He added that his motivation and performance decreased.

Lin feels that the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way he views work. He doesn’t want to live his whole life doing a job he no longer enjoys.

After discussions with his manager and HRD, Netflix agreed to terminate him first, and he received severance pay.

After leaving Netflix, Lin began to meet more people such as writers, entrepreneurs, and creators through his own business.

He also mentioned that he would dedicate himself completely to his own business.

“Even though I’m just starting out and don’t have a reliable income yet, I will trust the process that if I do work that gives me energy, good things will happen,” says Lim.
