New York JFK Airport Terminal 1 under construction

  • The long-announced renovation and expansion of Terminal 1 at New York JFK airport will begin on July 6, 2022.
  • What does it consist of ? The new Terminal 1 will be a huge international terminal that will cover the entire southern part of the airport, connecting the current Terminals 1 and 2 as well as the old Terminal 3, destroyed in 2013. A titanic project estimated at more than 9.5 billion dollars and which will employ more than 10,000 people.
  • The new terminal will include 23 new boarding gates and much brighter spaces. The passage of security will be more efficient with the deployment of biometric systems. The catering offer and the shops will also be reviewed.
  • In any case, the project will take time: the new boarding gates will not be usable before 2026 and the new Terminal 1 will be completed around 2030.

Who is affected by the work?

  • All passengers arriving at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at New York JFK Airport will be impacted by the disruptions caused by the works. This concerns passengers traveling with Air France, Delta Airlines, Brussel Airlines, Lufthansa, TAP Air Portugal, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, ITA Airways (ex-Alitalia) or Royal Air Maroc. Allow a little more time on the way back to avoid any inconvenience.
  • Please note if you are traveling with Delta Airlines, which occupies Terminal 2: the Air Train station in Terminal 2 will be closed from July 6, 2022. The Air Train will no longer serve Terminal 2 until further notice! If you arrive at Terminal 2 and want to take the Air Train, you will have to walk to Terminal 1. On the way back, if you plan to reach JFK airport with the Air Train, be sure to allow enough extra time to don’t miss your flight.
  • If you prefer not to take the Air Train due to disruptions, we recommend that you either take a taxi or opt for a one-way private airport transfer and or on the way back.
