The Public Prosecution Service is demanding unconditional community service against the two men who attacked a gay couple in Amsterdam East last year. The couple, Fabio and Daniel, were spat on and scolded as they walked down the street hand in hand.
The two were victims of homophobic violence twice in a short period of time last year. A minor boy insulted them when they walked hand in hand down the street on Easter Sunday, and a month later the couple were killed by two others. spat on and scolded.
Two men aged 21 and 22 were tried in the latter case today. An unconditional community service sentence of 120 hours was demanded against the 21-year-old man and the same sentence of 80 hours against the 22-year-old man.
Discrimination in the corona era
According to the OM, there was discrimination. This has been taken into account when determining the level of the requirement. The judiciary also took into account that the two were spat while the corona virus was circulating in the Netherlands.
The underage boy who insulted the men had previously been sentenced to 35 hours in apprenticeship. He also had to pay 500 euros in damages to the couple.
The gay couple decided to move from the eastern part of the city as a result of the incidents, the AD reported.
