Woodworm eating Tangier fishermen’s boats

Professionals of traditional fishing in the port of Tangier have expressed their concern about the damage that may result from the phenomenon of corrosion of their boats, due to their decay and infection with “woodworms”.

The Intermediate Chamber of Fishing said that the Moroccan Confederation of Traditional Fishing informed it of the complaints of professionals, noting that “the traditional fishing boat operators have recently suffered a lot of damage as a result of the boat hulls being exposed to decay caused by woodworms.”

According to the testimonies of a group of traditional fishing professionals affiliated with the port, this phenomenon causes a lot of damage to the processors and losses at the level of the boats’ hulls, which requires removing them from the water to the land periodically throughout the year, although it is a tedious and financially costly process.

In parallel, the Confederation called on the National Institute for Research in Fishing to intensify efforts to search for ways to treat this scourge and to reach effective and effective solutions that can protect traditional fishing boats from wood decay, according to the Chamber.
