Following the Covid-19 pandemic, Warner Media has made the decision to release several of its films in theaters and simultaneously on the HBO Max streaming service. If this was the idea of the century to limit financial losses due to the lack of audiences in cinemas, it was also a real victory for the many pirates who retrieve films on legal platforms to put them online on illegal download sites.

How to explain this phenomenal success?
Wonder Woman 1984 was exclusive to HBO Max and the streaming service is not yet available in France. In addition, the cinemas are closed and the film could not be released on a legal VOD platform (as we have the media chronology in France).
The only solution to see Wonder Woman 1984 was to go through the illegal download and get the VOSTFR version which was copied from HBO Max.
Note that 10% of illegal downloads is unprecedented, the record was previously obtained by Avengers: Endgame who had reached 5,63% for its first day of availability in high quality.
The latest original creation from Disney and Pixar Soul failed to do better with just 2,37% downloads on its first day. But let’s not compare the incomparable since Soul is available on a streaming service accessible in France with in addition a price 6.99 € / month.
Ultimately the moral of the story is that to eradicate illegal downloading, you have to offer the possibility of taking the legal route. When nothing is offered … People do not hesitate to go through pirated copies to watch the latest hottest movie of the moment!
