Women’s health is deteriorating faster than that of men – Wel.nl

Women live healthier lives and they get older. As a result, an important point is often overlooked: women live much longer than men in poor health. Trouw writes about this.

Researcher Lena Sialino of the Free University (VU) in Amsterdam explains that women up to forty years old perform the same as men on physical tests, but a big difference arises between 40 and 55 years. From the age of 55 onwards, the difference is no longer greater, but then women have fallen behind in terms of their health. This is apparent from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (Lasa) with data from people over 55 from Zwolle, Oss and Amsterdam.

According to Sialino, the difference in health is a combination of biology and lifestyle. “Women generally have a higher percentage of body fat, and they more often have osteoarthritis and obesity. Those diseases give more chance of complaints, certainly in combination with each other. The impact of unhealthy behavior can also be greater in women. That’s how the women’s brain responds differently to a cigarette. “

Fortunately, women generally live healthier lives than men and rather visit their GP. Sialino: “These are both protective factors in aging. Otherwise the difference might be even greater. ”
