Women lose jobs in tourism, entertainment, sales and health

The sectors with a predominance of professional women, such as tourism, entertainment, sales and health, are those with the greatest impact on job losses due to the pandemic, and the most complicated in recovery.

Develop new skills and train more young people in careers oriented towards technology and science, will be the competitive advantage for them to regain ground in the professionally and position themselves in positions of greater responsibility, said Mónica Flores, president of ManpowerGroup Latam.

“We must take advantage of the natural propensity to have the skills demanded in the 21st century, with the formation of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) competencies, to create sustainable models where women have participation and more economic independence. To reduce the levels of violence and the repetition of stereotypes, the focus is on financially independent women ”, said Barragán during her participation in the Women Economic Forum, in Spain, developed on this occasion virtually.

Businesses, for their part, must become organizations that promise women the ability to learn new transversal skills and develop, said Flores Barragán.

Training that involves any of the STEM competencies helps women position themselves in any of the areas that today have an important career path. Flores pointed out that research and exploration, STEM skills, are key to awakening interest in wanting to know more about a business or company, learning to design their own work models, developing critical thinking and other qualities that are in great demand in times of crisis.

Creativity and leadership, as part of social skills, are also in increasing demand in companies and are the type of skills that can transfer from job to job, across industries, but only one in five employers (19%) is investing in skills development programs focused on soft skills, revealed ManpowerGroup’s ‘The Skills Revolution’ report, revealing the impact of COVID-19 on digitization and innovative workforce solutions.

Biggest challenges in Latin America

For companies, having women in executive management positions can increase their financial results and generate competitive advantages, particularly in a period of crisis, since it is they who tend to most actively promote training and self-improvement. This was one of the conclusions reached in various presentations at the Women Economic Forum.

Mónica Flores pointed out that although there is progress, the pandemic has exacerbated a reality for the labor market, and this consists in that women do not achieve professional equality, but they are also more exposed to losing their source of employment and, in many cases, are victims of psychological and physical violence in the home.

“The figures in this regard are overwhelming, it has taken us many years to reach the levels in Europe, where 33% of participation in senior management and council positions is represented by women. In Latin America we add less than 25% ”, clarified the president of ManpowerGroup.

He asserted that the change will not happen quickly until two elements are met. The first is to break with the idea that there are careers for women and others for men. In addition, stereotypes about what the working life of women is like remains “a ghost” in its development. The prevailing stereotype is that of women happy in their work, but unhappy in their personal and social life.

“This kind of perspective is a drag. They are models that have been perpetuated, that doom us to failure as an economy and prevent us from generating sustainable business ”, added the directive.

Therefore, women, as well as brands and organizations must align themselves under new perspectives, post-crisis visions, where they have the ability to choose what skills they should develop, what type of career they seek to develop and not focus on the professional market and life in the company awaits them only to fulfill certain roles.
