Women are now in the majority among the economists | Financial professionals | 08/11/2022

The Advisory Council for the Assessment of Overall Economic Development, regularly abbreviated as “the Economic Wise Men”, gets two new members. At the suggestion of Economics Minister Robert Habeck, the economist Ulrike Malmendier and the economist Martin Werding are to complete the committee, which has long been understaffed, to the originally planned number of five members.

Ulrike Malmendier has been a professor of economics at the University of California in Berkeley since 2012. Her research focuses on behavioral economics, finance and monetary economics. Among other things, she researches the formation of expectations of citizens with regard to future inflation rates. The scientist, who is to be appointed by the end of February 2026, will be the first member of the Advisory Council to also hold a professorship outside of Germany.

Martin Werding has been Professor of Social Policy and Public Finance at the Ruhr University Bochum since 2008. His research focuses on the areas of social policy, labor market policy and public finance. Among other things, he conducts research on sustainable social security systems. Werding is to be appointed by the end of February 2028.

The committee also includes: Achim Truger from the University of Duisburg-Essen (council member since 2019), Veronika Grimm from the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Monika Schnitzer from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich (both council members since 2020). (hh)
