Women and young children freed from ‘baby factory’ Nigeria

The police in Nigeria say they have freed 24 children between 1 and 2 years old and four pregnant teenagers from a ‘baby factory’. The children are said to be in a bad state and have been taken to a police hospital. Where the pregnant teenagers are now has not been announced.

The children and girls were found on Tuesday in a building in Port Harcourt, in southern Nigeria. According to police, ‘baby factories’ are more often discovered in this region. Women would give birth here, after which the babies will be offered for sale. In some cases, young women would be detained here and raped to make them pregnant.

The owner of the building has been arrested. She disputes the allegations. “It’s an orphanage,” her lawyer told allafrica.com. “She cooperates with the Ministry of Social Affairs of the state.”
