Wolves roam ski slopes in the early morning – News

A Swiss filmed two wolves in the Flumserberg ski area on Monday morning. The responsible hunting authority knows. Nothing is being done about it.

In the video run two wolves comfortably over the ski slope. It looks as if the predators are at home on the ski slope and do this regularly. Dominik Thiel, head of the St. Gallen Office for Nature, Hunting and Fishing, says: “The two wolves have been in the area for around a year. They move between the Murg and Weißtannental valleys.”

It is not known which pack the wolves came from and how they relate to each other. But it could be that the animals wanted to start a family in the region. “We don’t perceive the wolves as a problem. They behave correctly,” says Thiel. However, it has also happened that they tore farm animals.

No worry lines at the hunting department

Thiel is not surprised by the sighting on the ski slope. It is common that the wolves are also on the go during the day. He would find it scary if the sighting had been later, many people had already been skiing. But in the morning, when operations are just beginning, it is not tragic. He compares the wolf with other wild animals, such as a deer, which can also be seen during the day.

Heinrich Michel, the managing director of Bergbahnen Flumserberg, says: “We knew that there were wolves in the area. Two wolves on our slopes, but that is extraordinary for us.” One was not worried, but could have dispensed with this kind of attention. When they found out about it, they immediately informed the gamekeeper. “He and the responsible office have assured us that there is no need to worry,” said Michel.

Not the first wolves on a ski slope

A wolf was spotted in the middle of the ski slope in January. Back then in the Obersaxen Mundaun ski area. The wolf sightings were also piling up there. Some people raised concerns about Obersaxen. The responsible gamekeeper Adrian Arquint said: “It is not good if wolves get used to humans too much.” The Graubünden Wild Hat tries to instil respect in the wolves so that they keep away from humans.

Such measures are currently not necessary in St. Gallen, says head of office Dominik Thiel. The two wolves have so far given no signs that they have got used to humans.
