Wolfsburg – Mainz: Renato Steffen conjures up VfL victory – Bundesliga

Perfect week for Wolfsburg!

VfL wins 4-0 against Mainz three days after the win against Malmö and confirms the strong form of the last few weeks. The Wolves have been unbeaten for four Bundesliga games, scored 10 out of 12 possible points and are in the middle of the race for the European Cup places.

The home side show brutal efficiency on Sunday evening. The first three shots that came at the Mainz goal were all in it.

The lead goal was scored in the 21st minute by a Sunday shot from Josip Brekalo (21) from 26 meters. The Croatian’s third goal of the season, he scored all three from a distance. Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner (25) still gets the ball, but can only direct it to the lower edge of the crossbar, from where the ball flies into the net.

Shortly before the break (45th) Zentner only reacts strongly with a deflected shot by Daniel Ginczek (28), then it gets strange: Moussa Niakhate (23) wants to clear the ball on the line, while Zentner prefers to bury the play equipment under himself. The misunderstanding between the two Mainzers creates a slapstick template that Renato Steffen uses and nods to 2-0.

The hosts ensured clear conditions early in the second half (49th). After preparatory work by strong Ginczek, the 3: 0 falls through Yannick Gerhardt (25), who played for the injured captain Joshua Guilavogui (29, knee problems) in the defensive midfield. “I waited a long time for my chance. I’m happy with the result and my goal, ”said the goal scorer after the game and praised:“ If we reach our potential for 90 minutes, we can beat many teams. ”

The most beautiful goal of the evening is scored in the 68th minute. Steffen nibbles half the Mainz back team and shows his whole class. Pirouette, tunnel, pike – a real carnival goal seals Mainz’s 15th defeat of the season in the Fastnacht jerseys.

With a win, the FSV could have increased the distance to the relegation site to five points. Instead, Mainz are now in the middle of the relegation battle and have already lost 15 games after 23 matchdays. As many as in the entire 2018/19 season.

Eye-catcher when looking at the match report sheet: VfL had two substitute goalkeepers on the bench with Niklas Klinger (24) and Pavao Pervan (32). The latter never took a seat there, however, and left the stadium before the kick-off in the delivery room.
