Wolff does not rule out arrival of Vettel to Mercedes: ‘Consider’ | NOW

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff does not rule out the possibility that his Formula 1 racing stable will try to attract Sebastian Vettel after next season. The 32-year-old German driver announced on Tuesday that he will leave Ferrari at the end of this year.

“Sebastian is a great driver, great personality and added value for every team. Looking to the future, our first loyalty lies with our current drivers. But of course we have to consider this development,” Wolff told the German news agency DPA.

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas are currently the drivers of Mercedes, but like Vettel with Ferrari, they have an expiring contract, which can lead to a big dance of seats among the top teams in the motorsport class.

Vettel had been talking to Ferrari about a new contract for months, but those negotiations were ended Monday evening. Various media reports that Vettel was offered a considerably lower salary and that he wanted to stay with Ferrari longer than was possible.

“Financial matters have not played a role”

The four-time world champion denied those rumors. “Financial matters have not played a role in the joint decision not to move forward. That is never a topic for me to make important choices and it never will be,” he said in a statement.

It is not yet known who will succeed Vettel at Ferrari in 2021 and what the future of the former driver of Sauber, Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing looks like. There is a chance that he will leave Formula 1, but he does not yet make any statements about that.

“In the past few months, we have all been able to think quietly about the real priorities in our lives. I will take the time to see what really matters to me when it comes to my future in Formula 1,” said Vettel, who hinted at spending more time with his family.
