Offenbach A “sculpture project” with installations all over Offenbach begins on Saturday.

“Suitcases are full of symbolism,” says Isabel Thelen. The Offenbach-based artist has been looking for suitcases in the past few weeks and picked them up from bulky waste or received them as gifts after being called on social media.

She has prepared these and will set them up under the motto “Borderline Experience” on the city limits between Offenbach and Frankfurt as part of the “Sculpture Project” art project from 3pm on Saturday. “I focused on separation, flight and wanderlust and assigned two to three suitcases to each of these topics,” explains the artist.

The suitcases are just one of around 80 installations that will “pop up” throughout the city, according to Lutz Jahnke from the Academy for Interdisciplinary Projects (Afip). It is Afip’s farewell project, who has to leave their premises in Ludwigsstrasse on January 31st.

The people of Offenbach should get on their bikes and “go looking for art”, says Jahnke. An interactive map with an overview of the various locations is listed at afip-hessen.de/skulpturenpark. The sculptures can be admired for 57 days. It is planned that they may be stolen or destroyed, says Jahnke.
