With the decline in the prevalence of Covid-19, high school students could resume full-time study – in Latvia – News

Marking the potential study scenario for the second semester, the Minister pointed out that the study process for 1st-6th grade will be provided in person, as well as 9th and 12th grade students will return to school after the winter holidays, if the epidemiological situation allows. Otherwise, full-time studies would take place only for grades 1-4. She emphasized that this was possible provided the situation stabilized and the desired reduction in morbidity was achieved.

The Minister pointed out that schools must look for solutions so that students in all other classes have the opportunity to study in person. “Currently, we see that more and more schools in grades 1-6 are switching to model B, where students study at school for one week and remotely for another week. The management of the institution should, as far as possible, plan work so that the teacher does not have to work both face-to-face and remotely. “encouraged the Minister.

She also suggested that, when implementing the learning process at a distance, it should be restructured so as to reduce the number of subjects to be acquired in a week or a month and vary accordingly, organizing training in subject blocks, identifying the key skills to be acquired.

Taking into account that new content is being introduced in 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th grades, there will also be changes in the procedure for assessing the progress of 1st grade students. In the 1st grade, the summative assessments at the end of the learning phase, including at the end of the school year, will be expressed in the learning levels against the results to be achieved by the student. Descriptions of acquisition levels are used to express the assessment, as specified in the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers. In electronic classroom management systems, it is recommended to use the abbreviations S on a daily basis to reflect the levels of acquisition, which means that the student has started to learn the topic, T – continues to learn, A – learned, P – in-depth.

In turn, summative assessments, as before, in grades 4, 7, 10 in all subjects are expressed on a 10-point scale at the end of the study period.

The Minister pointed out that on November 27, the management team of the “School2030” project will agree on the student assessment documents and will approve and place the necessary documents in the e-environment by December 4.

By November 27, schools will be sent an instruction on the registration of students for state examinations.

Diagnostic works in the second semester for 3rd and 6th grade students will take place in person. If this is not possible, the educational institution will be able to offer them at a distance or when it is possible in person.

It is planned that the 9th grade exams will take place in person. If this is not possible, the exams will not take place,

except for the Latvian language exam in optional minority education programs. Examinations for 12th grade students on secondary education are planned according to last year’s sample, the decision to take the fourth elective exam will be announced before the spring break, Šuplinska said.
