With SNCF, the Waze application will now indicate level crossings

Every year in France, dozens of collisions between road vehicles and trains are deplored. at level crossings. According to the Prévention-gare.fr website, 96 accidents were observed in 2018, resulting in 16 dead and 9 seriously injured. In 2017, 109 collisions resulted in the death of 42 people, and 15 serious injuries.

To try to limit the risk of accidents, SNCF has concluded an agreement with the Waze app in recent weeks, RTL reports. The 14 million users of this community GPS will now be alerted to the proximity of a level crossing.

An alert is displayed

As soon as a level crossing is located on the path of the motorist, an alert will appear, informing of the proximity of the crossing. “This alert will remain on screen until you cross the railroad tracks”, assures RTL. In total, throughout France, SNCF Réseau counted 15,308 level crossings.

“This is an important step forward in terms of road safety because level crossings are unique points of the road network”, declared Alain Autruffe, Director of the Level Crossings program for SNCF Réseau. In the vast majority of cases, accidents at level crossings are due to non-compliance with the Highway Code.
