– “I starved to death right away, so I came to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.”
On the afternoon of the 22nd, Jo Young-yuk, head of the Gyeonggi-do branch of the Korea Entertainment and Food Industry Federation, met in front of the main gate of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Sejong City Government Complex, saying, “90% of the 30,000 entertainment bars nationwide are small and livelihood businesses that pay their living expenses for a month.”

Chairman Cho said, “There are many people who have 3 or 4 rooms and one owner cooks and serves them. I understand the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19), but are they still the same people, aren’t they too discriminating?”

On that day, 99 members of the Korea Entertainment Food Industry Federation from all over the country held a rally in front of the Ministry of Health and Welfare and strongly criticized the ban on entertainment facilities that had been extended until the end of this month. They demanded the government to provide a standard for quarantine that is appropriate for tax and building rent reductions, support for loss compensation, and equity due to forced closure.

Chairman Cho said, “I am not hoping for preferential treatment for the government.” He said, “It allows you to open karaoke bars that are more dense than entertainment bars and have a lot of contact, but asks you to close the doors of entertainment bars that are much smaller, so what kind of business owner can understand?” I hope this will be alleviated.”

According to the Entertainment Food Industry Federation, after the spread of Corona 19, there are differences in each region, but entertainment pubs have been closed for 7 to 8 months. Most of the business owners who attended the rally had debts piled up. There were also many people who ran out of security deposits because they couldn’t borrow bonds or pay building rent. Entertainment pubs are also not eligible for management stabilization fund support provided by the government and local governments.

Mr. Yoon Mo (55) from Ansan said, “I have a debt of 80 million won for the combined credit loan and the money I borrowed from acquaintances.” “The rent for the building goes up to 3.7 million won a month, and employees who can’t work must pay a minimum wage. Because of this, debt is accumulating.”

Mr. Jang-mo (58), who opened an entertainment bar a year ago, said, “I opened the store for 70 million won, but the corona broke out and I borrowed 30 million won more through credit loans.” “We are self-employed, and we pay the same tax. I don’t know if I should continue to be discriminated against.”

In an appeal, the Korea Entertainment and Food Industry Federation urged the government to provide “equal support”. They said, “We sincerely ask for fair and fair support so that entertainment bars, mostly livelihoods, can survive the corona crisis together.”
